Simulation of hypersonic flows involving extreme temperatures and associated real gas effects such as those encountered by reentry vehicles has always been critical. Present paper discusses the development of an in-house solver for computing the hypersonic flow field in Martian environment with real gas effects. It is a 2D/axisymmetric, unstructured Navier-Stokes solver incorporated with several flux computation schemes. An 8 species (CO2, CO, C, N2, O2, N, O & NO) and 10 elementary reactions model is incorporated for Mars atmosphere. Various bench mark test cases are used for code validation and verification. Simulation of simple shock tube and inviscid flow over ramp cases show accurate prediction of shock Mach number and flow deflection angle respectively. High enthalpy flow of actual Martian condition is simulated over a cylinder and real gas effects like chemical non-equilibrium, dissociation are observed as expected. A test case of shock wave boundary layer interaction shows that the size of separation bubble in Mars atmosphere is smaller than Earth atmosphere for similar free stream flow conditions.
