A low-cost hybrid solar simulator for longer time scale thermal applications
Solar-thermal desalination especially the concept of solar still has received fresh attention with the advent of photothermal materials. Majority of the reported investigations in this regard were carried out in a lab-scale environment, using commercially available solar simulators. The commercially available solar simulators commonly use a Zenon arc/flash lamp as their light source. Considering the short life cycle, high power requirement of Zenon arc/flash lamps, and their high maintenance cost, possess an urgent requirement for an alternative light source for such applications. LEDs as light source have been considered as an alternative in the literature for more than a decade now. Low cost, high stability and uniform optical spectrum makes them an attractive choice for this purpose. Short span of spectrum match and their thermal management issues for high power, had limited their commercialization in the early stages. The LED-Halogen hybrid solar simulator configuration has been proposed as an alternative solution, to eliminate the limitations of the former. In this study we have shown how commercially available inexpensive optical accessories, can be used to obtain a class A match of the optical spectrum for such a configuration. The effect of LED substrate temperature on temporal stability have been systematically investigated for longer time scales here.
