Resumo

In this research, enhancement in heat transfer performance of a simple rectangular fin is analysed by incorporating rectangular extensions and various modifications in that rectangular extension. Extensions on the surfaces are used to increase the surface area of contact with the fluid flowing around it. About 5-13 % more heat transfer can be achieved with simple rectangular extensions on fin when compared to a normal rectangular fin without any extensions [1,11]. This work proposes to estimate the increase in heat transfer performance of a rectangular fin having rectangular extensions, various modifications in rectangular extension and these results will be compared with rectangular fin without any extensions. Fins are designed with Solid works and analysis of the fin performance was done by ANSYS Fluent. Fins with modified extensions aiming the reduction in material are designed. Various modifications made are Fin with rectangular cuts, Fin with cut in rectangular extensions, Fin with holes in rectangular extensions. The heat transfer performance of rectangular fins with extensions and various modifications are compared with fin without any extension. About 49% more heat transfer was achieved with the rectangular fin incorporated with holes in rectangular extension as compare to simple rectangular fin.
