Resumo

High energy density and higher energy-to-weight ratio makes Lithium-ion cells a preferable choice for a wide range of energy applications, including energy storage for electric vehicle battery packs. The performance capability of the cell determines the life of battery pack. At higher discharge, excessive heat generation may adversely affect the battery pack performance. The present study emphasizes numerical simulation and validated with previous studies data to analyze thermal behavior of electrochemical cell during transient discharge. A methodology has been established to significantly reduce the computational time by truncating computational domain (cell strip), which emulate a full cell geometry voltage and temperature. Variation in prismatic cell parameters for a range of cell discharge rate (3C, 5C), coolant inlet temperature (297 K) with natural and forced convection have been analyzed. It conforms that a) cell-strip reduces computational time by 5x without impacting voltage or maximum temperature values b) Cell temperature increases rapidly with increasing C-rate c) For a given coolant inlet temperature (297 K) and flow velocity (3 m/sec), maximum temperature of the cell increases by 8.9 °C, with increase in discharge rate from 3C to 5C and, d) Temperature uniformity of cell is influenced by Max_ΔT, which maintained under 3 °C (to extend cell life) at 3C discharging with 6 m/s coolant flow velocity.
