Resumo

A novel Gyroid structure based cross flow heat exchanger (HX) is proposed as an alternative to replace conventional cross flow HX by achieving objectives like a higher surface area to volume ratio, light-weight, compact HX, higher heat transfer, and lower pressure drop. The fluid flow and heat transfer characteristics of the proposed Gyroid based cross flow HX are investigated with the help of the Computational Fluid Dynamics tool (CFD). Gyroid structure is created using the concept of Triply Periodic Minimal Surface (TPMS). With the advent of the Additive manufacturing technique, it becomes easier to develop complex geometries of TPMS structures for building HX. This paper proposes the novel geometry of the Gyroid surface created by transforming it into a tubular form using a specific equation. The results show that due to larger surface area and enhanced fluid mixing, the Gyroid structure shows better performance compared to conventional circular tubes. The numerical results also indicate that the heat transfer rate of Gyroid HX is 200% greater than conventional circular tube HX at the cost of higher pressure drop of hot fluid flowing inside Gyroid tube. Friction loss has decreased by 69% on the cold side of the Gyroid HX compared to conventional HX.
