Resumo

Thermal energy storage is classified as sensible, latent, and thermochemical energy storage. Among the TES, thermochemical energy storage is one of the potential techniques due to its high energy density. Dual metal hydride-based thermochemical energy storage system uses high- and low-temperature metal hydrides. High temperature metal hydride works as a thermal energy reservoir while low-temperature metal hydride acts as hydrogen storage media. This study includes a discussion on the absorption of thermal energy in a cylindrical metal hydride bed with radially distributed axial tubes. Mg2NiH4 is considered as storage media for energy absorption analysis and a 3-D model is developed using COMSOL Multiphysics. The variation of the number of heat transfer fluid tubes on heat transfer is studied and the adequate number of heat transfer tubes is determined for different geometrical parameters. Three aspect ratios such as 0.5, 1, and 2 are studied for better heat absorption characteristics in metal hydride beds. The cross-sectional temperature variation at a different axial length of the metal hydride bed is compared for all three aspect ratios. It is observed that the thermal energy supplied and stored in the metal hydride bed is maximum for aspect ratio 0.5, i.e., 274.83 kJ and 310.05 kJ, respectively.
