Resumo

The objective of the present work was to investigate the direct contact condensation of a steam jet in stagnant subcooled water at different jet Reynolds numbers and condensation potential by using PIV measurements and 3D simulations. The experiment was performed with pool temperature in the range of 30 to 60°C ±1°C, and steam Reynold's number varied from 10680 to 19796 with a 2 mm diameter of the nozzle made of Teflon. Planar PIV with Nd: YAG laser and a CCD camera was used to measure the instantaneous velocity at 5 Hz. The measurement region was the single-phase regime in the range of L/D = 40-125. Time-averaged velocity estimated for 20 seconds was used to study the characteristics of the turbulent jet behavior, i.e., self-similarity, virtual origin, etc. The simulation was performed using the Volume of Fluid (VOF) multiphase model and the thermal phase-change model as a user-defined function (UDF). Also, Lee and thermal phase-change models were tested. VOF with thermal phase change model agreed well with the PIV measurements.
