Аннотация

In Pressurised Water Reactor (PWR) boric acid is added to the water coolant to compensate the excess reactivity of fresh fuel, but slugs of low borated water can also accumulate in the primary cooling system. This slug can enter the reactor core and leads to decrease in neutron poison which causes insertion of significant reactivity. It may leads to accidental consequences by damaging reactor core. The mixing of the un-borated water slug with borated water in the Reactor Pressure Vessel (RPV) before entering the core can avoid such scenario. In view of this, reliable estimation of the local mixing distribution of un-borated water slug in RPV is necessary. To study the mixing behaviour theoretically, the experimental data of 1:5 scaled German KONVOY type reactor experimental facility has been used. Open source OpenFOAM CFD code is used for modelling of un-borated water slug mixing phenomena. The simulation results obtained from OpenFOAM is compared with experimental results. Effect of grid size variation, geometrical simplification and different turbulence models are also studied in this analysis. Comparisons of predicted CFD results are found in good agreement with the experimental data.
