Analytical Analysis of Aerostatic Thrust Bearing in Adiabatic and Isothermal Condition
Air bearings are the potential candidate for precision machines and equipment. Unlike conventional bearing, there is no physical contact between the moving surfaces. In case of aerostatic bearing, the pressurized air supplied to the bearing through the orifice to maintain a small gap (in µm) between the thrust pads. Navier-Stokes and Reynolds equations are used to analyze the fluid flow across the thrust pad surface.
In this work, we evaluated the bearing characteristics for isothermal and adiabatic flow conditions at various clearance heights. The aerostatic thrust bearing with central feed hole and pocket is considered for the present analysis. Analytical solutions for various parameters such as pressure distribution across the thrust pad, load capacity, mass flow rate, velocity and pressure at the orifice exit have been obtained. We compared these parameters at various clearance height for both the flow conditions.
