Analysis of Compression Ignition Engine Performance and Emission Parameters using Simulink at Different Engine Operating Conditions

Get access DOI: 10.1615/IHMTC-2021.970
pages 653-658

Diesel engines are widely used as a power source of engineering machinery, automobiles, and shipping equipment due to their excellent drivability and thermal efficiency. At the same time, diesel engines are major contributors of various types of air pollutant emissions such as Carbon monoxide (CO), Oxides of Nitrogen (NOx), Particulate matter (PM), and other harmful compounds. With the increasing concern of environmental protection and more stringent government regulation on exhaust emissions, reduction in engine emissions has become a major research task in engine development. It has become necessary to predict the performance and emission characteristics of diesel engines without conducting experiments to avoid the cost of experimentation and delay in conduction and analysis of results. The focus of the present study is the modelling of performance and emission characteristics of Diesel engines at various engine speeds and loads, using modified versions of Simulink® pre-built models. In this work, a Simulink® model was created using Powertrain BlocksetTM components. The model returned several emission and performance parameters as output. It was observed, for a multicylinder Compression Ignition configuration, the result plots matched data obtained from physical testing of a similarly configured engine.
