Impinging jet provides highly efficient cooling for various applications and when combined with metal foam, it further improves cooling effectiveness and provides better temperature control. Thermal management using metal foam is gradually evolving as a popular cooling technique employing jet impingement. The present experimental investigation examines the thermal characteristics of 0.15 mm thick, hot stainless steel (ss-304) flat plate with copper foam using impinging jet of air through a circular nozzle. A thermographic recorder is used for obtaining the experimental thermal images of the test specimen which is further used for thermal performance analysis. Investigation is carried out using open-cell copper foam of thickness 4 mm and 6 mm of 10 pores per inch (PPI) and 90% porosity. Investigation is carried out at Reynolds number of 23000 and for a varying distance between the nozzle and the plate. The outcomes indicated that the thermal performance of thin metal foam had improved in the wall jet region compared to thick metal foam and the smooth plate. Nusselt number is found to vary significantly with z/d for flat plate with metal foam while the variation is minimal for flat smooth plate.
