Thermal Performance of Square, Circular and Rectangular Earth-Tube Air Heat Exchanger- A Numerical Study

In this study the thermal performance of U-shaped ground tube air heat exchanger is numerically simulated for summer cooling condition using ANSYS commercial software. The tube of square, circular and rectangular cross-section of same length is considered and simulated using the k-ε (Realization) turbulence model. The performance of all three cross-sectional ground tube air heat exchangers is evaluated at velocities 2 m/s, 3.2 m/s and 5 m/s. The simulation result indicates that there is higher temperature drop obtained at lower velocity and temperature of air reaches to soil temperature at shorter length for the velocity of air 2 m/s. The temperature of air is measured along the length of ground tube heat exchanger and found that rectangular cross-section has more temperature drop compared to other two configurations. It is found that the cooling potential of rectangular cross-section ground tube air heat exchanger is greater than that of square and circular cross-section ground tube air heat exchanger.
