Аннотация

Typically, Savonius-style turbines were used to generate electricity at low wind speeds, but recent research advances have aided in designing turbines that capture energy from slow-moving water in open channel flows. The main objective of this numerical study is to investigate the hydrodynamic performance of three different horizontal axis hydrokinetic turbines to tap power from open channels. Validation studies are conducted and compared with available literature. The diameter, height, and speed of water were taken as 0.115 m, 0.21m, and 0.54 m/sec, respectively, to design turbines. A study of grid independence is also conducted. For three different types of horizontal axis turbines, i.e., two-bladed semicircular rotor, three-bladed semicircular rotor, and a water rotor, 2D numerical simulations are conducted with tip speed ratio (TSR) values 0.2-1.2. Based on the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation results, the highest power coefficient obtained for 2-bladed semicircular, water rotor, 3-bladed semicircular rotor is 0.20, 0.173, and 0.128 at TSR 0.8, 1.0 and 0.8, respectively. As a result, it can be concluded that the 2-bladed semicircular rotor showed better performance than the water rotor and the 3-bladed semicircular rotor.
