Аннотация

The influence of external magnetic field on the Rayleigh-Benard convection flow is explored in this paper. The numerical code for buoyancy-driven convective flow with Magnetohydrodynamics is developed on the open source platform OpenFOAM. The developed solver is capable of simulating steady and unsteady flows on complex geometry. The fluid is heated from the bottom surface, and top surface is kept cold and remaining all sides are kept thermally insulated. Thus the system becomes unsteady beyond the critical Rayleigh number (Rac = 1710), and fluid starts to appear in the regular sequence of convection rolls. If the fluid is electrically conducting and the magnetic field is imposed on the system, then the Rayleigh-Benard convection exhibit remarkably distinct flow pattern than the normal hydrodynamic buoyancy flow. The magnetic field is applied normal to the isothermal walls in the range of Ha = 0 - 100, with corresponding Rayleigh number of Ra = 103 − 106. The applied magnetic field and its orientation on the system show retardation in the convection rolls formation, as well as Nusselt number and the critical Rayleigh number (Rac), increases with increase in the Hartmann number (Ha).
